Slocum House, in Syracuse, NY, has been a house of hospitality for 35 years. After fifteen years of offering hospitality to those in need, and becoming a Sanctuary House during the war in El Salvador, the house has been home to Jail Ministry for the past 20 years. Jail Ministry is a grass roots, CW-inspired criminal justice organization, sending visitor-advocates each day into the local city-county lock-up, receiving upwards of 100 calls a day from inmates, and working on restorative justice issues in the community.
The house is a large house in a poor neighborhood, and has space for a couple of people to live here, and additional rooms for possible hospitality. The house is maintained by financial support from Jail Ministry and from the contributions of those who live in the house, a flexible $200 a month.
We are looking for CWers who can find employment here in Syracuse, contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of the house, and use the space here for whatever their passion might be in the world of hospitality, social justice, and nonviolent direct action. We are looking for someone(s) who can take responsibility for the house, continue the hospitality offered to Jail Ministry, and use their talents and skills in making good use of the space and resources here (free phones, a hard-wired internet service, comfortable space, connections to the local peace and justice community).
Here is Syracuse is a strong peace and justice network, from the Syracuse Peace Council and nonviolent direct action campaigns such as the upstate NY anti-drone campaign focused on the drones flying out of nearby Hancock airbase.
